Kamala

Carried across the river by a friendly ferryman, Siddhartha enters the city and meets the beautiful courtesan Kamala. To win her he becomes her pupil in love and takes service with the merchant Kamaswami.

Chapter 6

With the Childlike People

Siddhartha prospers in trade and pleasure, learning the ways of the 'childlike people' while watching them from a half-amused distance. Slowly wealth, the dice, and the wine begin to dull the seeker within him.

Sansara

Sansara

The years drag Siddhartha down into greed, gambling, and weariness of soul. Sick of himself and his hollow, luxurious life, he abandons everything and wanders away, his inner bird gone silent.

By the River
Chapter 8

By the River

Standing at the river in despair, Siddhartha nearly drowns himself — until the sacred word Om rises in him and restores his will to live. He falls into a deep, healing sleep and wakes renewed, reunited with Govinda.

The Ferryman
Chapter 9

The Ferryman

Siddhartha stays to live and learn beside Vasudeva, the humble ferryman who knows how to listen. Together they learn from the river that time is an illusion and all voices flow into one.

The Son
Chapter 10

The Son

Kamala, now a pilgrim, dies by the river from a snake's bite, leaving Siddhartha their son. The spoiled, grieving boy rejects his father's gentle love and finally runs away to the city.

Chapter 11

Om

Tormented by love and loss for his son, Siddhartha's old wound burns until the river's laughter and the holy syllable Om finally heal him into wholeness and peace.

Govinda
Chapter 12

Govinda

Years later the still-seeking Govinda meets Siddhartha again and finds him radiant. Siddhartha shares his hard-won wisdom — that love and the unity of all things matter more than words — and Govinda glimpses the eternal in his friend's smile.
